Most people have played Blackjack at some point. Whether online or at your favorite casino, Blackjack is always one of the most popular games available. However, many people are looking for new twists on the classic game. With that in mind, Blackjack Tournaments are becoming all the rage these days.
Blackjack Tournaments, sometimes just called Elimination Blackjack, are played almost as a mix between a poker tournament and standard Blackjack. The goal is to accumulate the most chips at the end, like in poker. In the process you are playing against the other players at the table – trying to knock them out of the tournament.
However, just like in regular Blackjack you are playing against the dealer’s hand to determine whether you have a winner or not. So in that sense, you do not play directly against the other players at the table. You only play against them in strategy.

There are usually about 6 players at a table to start a Blackjack Tournament. Each player starts with an equal number of chips. The dealer deals to each player in turn, passing a Button, just like in poker, to determine who gets dealt first and last.
The advantage to going last in a Blackjack Tournament is that you get to see what your opponents have all done. You can see what their hands are and how much they have wagered.
There is a set number of rounds for each stage of the tournament. Once the round ends, the players with the lowest number of chips at each table are eliminated. If the tournament is a small, single table tournament, it may be that only one or two players are eliminated after each round.
However, if it is a larger tournament, then perhaps only the top one or two players at each table are passed through to the next round and everyone else is eliminated. It is important to know the rules for elimination before starting, as this is obviously the most important piece of information.
Another important thing is to make sure you have a basic understanding of Blackjack. Although Blackjack Tournament strategy is going to be somewhat different, you should understand your hand value in relation to the dealer’s and the most likely hands that the dealer could make.
Often in Tournament Blackjack, your strategy on betting is far more important than your hit or stand strategy. Since everyone at the table is playing against the dealer, it is not uncommon for nearly everyone to win and lose the same hands. For instance, if the dealer gets Blackjack, then everyone likely loses, or conversely if the dealer busts, then everyone wins, provided they did not bust as well.
There are several strategies for how one should size their bets. Some will place all large bets trying to build a huge stack, while others will place mostly min bets, hoping that others will bust. Yet other players will just place medium sized bets throughout the tournament, figuring they’ll win some and lose some, just hoping to survive.
The best strategy seems to be sort of a tale of two betting extremes. This strategy says that you should mostly play min bets, but also mix in some very large bets. It is usually best to save the larger bets when you can act later in the hand and when it gets later in the round.
This strategy allows you to combat the very small ball players, while also waiting out the over-aggressive players and having a chance to catch them at the end.
Another strategic move is to bet in conjunction with your nearest opponents when you get to act after them. Some will think that if they bet large then you should be small to minimize your losses. However, as mentioned it is fairly common for players to win and lose together.
So if your opponent bets large and you bet small, he may win big and you win small. This could put him in striking distance during the elimination round. On the other hand, if you both bet big then your lead stays in-line relative to your opponent’s stack.
